<span style="font-family: Arial;">Hello all,<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">We hope you are well. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">We apologise for our silence
in the past two weeks. On the last day of the CUMECS cruise we were very busy
with preparing for disembarkation, making data back ups and clearing the
laboratories. And after disembarkation, some of the cruise participants headed back
home whereas others attended workshops and conferences across <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">We are very happy with the
CUMECS cruise and we think it was a great success. Our young team (with average
age of 32 years) worked really well. We managed to obtain more data than we
hoped for, and we discovered some really interesting features along the
Malta-Sicily Escarpment. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The multibeam echosounder
data allowed us to identify numerous submarine landslides that extend from the
canyon head towards the continental shelf. The seismic data provided
information on the nature and depth of these landslides as well as the presence
of buried channels upslope of the canyon heads. We obtained 9 sediment cores
that should allow us to determine the nature and age of the landslides, as well
as the history of flow activity into the canyon head. The ROV survey, on the
other hand, provided evidence of deep water coral communities, as well as human
disturbance, in the canyon heads.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The CUMECS cruise may be
over, but our work is not. The next phase of our project will involve
processing and analysing the acoustic and sedimentological data acquired during
the expedition. We will generate detailed 3D models of the seafloor and 2D
images of the sub-seafloor to understand the evolution of the Malta-Sicily
Escarpment in the past. We will also use these data to test predictive habitat mapping
techniques. We plan to investigate the sediment cores in the laboratory to
determine the nature, origin, age and frequency of landslides and flows within
the canyons. And, finally, we will watch the ROV footage again to identify and
map benthic habitats and biota in detail.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial;">When all the analyses are completed, we will produce articles that will
be reviewed by scientific experts in the field and published in international scientific
journals. We also plan to present the results of our study at a number of international
conferences.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The </span>CUMECS cruise is almost coming to an end, but a lot of new data is still coming in!! We can't stop!:)<br />
<br />
This morning we deployed a high resolution seismic source called Sparker, and at the same time we were shooting the Chirp, here you have one of the profiles collected crossing a massive landslide. This profile is like a x-ray image that shows the sub-seafloor and displays the main geological features forming that landslide.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
After the seismic operations we started another ROV transect, between 300-500 m water depth. Many observations were done with the most important being the surprising presence of two other sharks, an octopus, fish and a really angry squat lobster which attacked our poor Pollux (ROV). Unfortunately we found as well a lot of rubbish, and fishing lines abandoned, which suppose a big danger for marine organisms.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
We used an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) to measure the oceanographic currents of the area. We have also done a dredge to sample the upper part of seafloor and we have collected fragments of coral and rocks.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">We also continued getting samples from the seafloor, and today we managed to obtain six sediment cores from the submarine landslide and a nearby channel. We have been a bit unlucky with the seismic acquisition system, however, because the high temperatures are affecting the power supply; our helpful technicians are trying to solve the problem.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">But we are happy for another reason! Our chief engineer Pietro has invited us to some his home-made limoncello...oh my God!!!! <br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And the people on board the RV Urania are just start trembling for the tomorrow's football match......because the crew and some scientists are Italian and also there are some Spanish onboard!</span><br />

Today has been an amazing day, because we have successfully recovered three gravity cores of approximately 3 m length at 300, 500 and 600 m water depth.The selection of the coring locations was based on the recently acquired multibeam data from the Malta-Sicily Escarpment. We targeted an interesting small landslide within a larger landslide scar to understand its nature and age. While we were collecting the cores we were paid a visit by a friendly shark.<br />

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
This is the most important result of the night! While we were surveying the outer shelf along the Malta Escarpment, the crew of the Urania and many members of the CUMECS team were eagerly following the Euro 2012 semi-final match between Germany and Italy. And while we were doing this, we discovered a new submarine canyon, the head of which is characterised by small-scale submarine landslides. Since Mario Balotelli was the man of the match, we decided to call this canyon <b>Balotelli canyon</b>.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
We left Malta Grand Harbour early this morning aboard a
conveyance ship which ferried us to R.V. Urania which was waiting for us
outside the harbour. This ‘tender’ was
larger than many of the ships scientists would use to conduct research
from! It did not take long to complete
the 3 mile journey to the Urania in open water.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
All luggage was transferred by crane (for safety reasons,
not because we packed too much), and then our safety tour began. Indoors the ship is air conditioned, but the
weather was very warm and once a door to the outside was opened, everyone was
greeted by a blast of hot air. Many of the scientists had to stop themselves
jumping into the flat calm water for a swim.
Time passed quickly setting up equipment and before long it was time for
lunch. Every scientist left satisfied
knowing then next work shift would be fuelled by delicious ravioli. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The cruise work is split into shifts, 8-12, 12-4 and 4-8
through the full 24 hours of the day. As
a result some people went to bed in preparation for their night shift, while
others worked.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The Urania and her crew, being Italian, are full of
expectation for tonight’s football game against Germany. Most scientists will also be cheering on
Italy regardless of their own nationality, after all, we have to show
solidarity with our hosts, no? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
We are in Italian waters where we started running Chirp and Multibeam at 1200 m water depth. The weather and the ambience couldn't be better. We are mapping the outer continental shelf and the heads of some submarine canyons. And we have already discovered a small submarine landslide!</div>
